Crisis in Care

This is an excellent extended (5 minutes) story on primary care shortage, reasons for it and need for more family physicians, PAs, and NPs. It’s from KC, with focus on University of Missouri. As noted below, it also played in New Orleans, although can’t find that it ran on Fox13.

Presidents Message (May 2009)

It is finally looking like spring in the Wasatch. A seasonal creek runs behind my house and is bubbling with spring runoff. I hear Zion National Park is beautiful as usual this time of year.

I have had the pleasure of attending several activities with our family medicine medical students recently. On May 5th the UAFP Executive Committee members attended the annual dinner for the Family Medicine Interest Group at the University of Utah. At this meeting the incoming FMIG presidents outline the activities for the year. It was great to see the next generation of family medicine leaders stepping up to the plate. FMIG plays a great role as a forum where students can investigate possible careers in family medicine. We asked what we could do as the Academy to further support the students. One response was to consider making the entire membership payment for students to join AAFP and UAFP. Currently the Academy pays $10 of the $25 fee. We will be taking this request to the Board for consideration at the next meeting. I personally support the change as UAFP is in a good financial position and I feel we need to do all we can for the next generation of family physicians.

I also attending the Family Medicine Honor Student Banquet on May 7. This banquet recognizes the students graduating with honors in family medicine. The students are asked to bring a physician who mentored them in their career choice as a guest to the banquet. Five Utah physicians were honored as mentors: Drs. Marc Babitz (Salt Lake City), Joseph Brent Liddle (Pleasant Grove), James Peterson (Salt Lake City), Brannick Riggs (Hooper) and Darrell Stacey (Orem). It was very moving to hear the students describe the support they got from these wonderful doctors in our communities.

Please let the Academy know of any concerns or suggestions you have. Enjoy a wonderful springtime with your families. As always, thank you for all you do for family medicine and the citizens of Utah.
